Living for Chicago and Hamilton in a Vintage Dress

Warning: “Hamilton” song title jokes and major obsessive musical theater behavior, plus hot spots in Chicago ahead.

I bought tickets for Hamilton in Chicago a year and a half ago and there was no way I was going give away my shot just because I moved to SF. So I packed a bag and flew back east to catch the Saturday matinee with my right hand man, Kate. I literally thought about my outfit for 3 weeks as if the actual Alexander Hamilton was going to be there, evaluating entry based on personal style.  I settled with this vintage housedress from 1950s. I love the mauve color and the cream piping, plus it’s so comfortable for sitting in the dark for three hours. We geeked outside the room where it happens for about 10 minutes before the show, taking photos with every sign we could find like crazed tourists.

IMG_8343If you are thinking about spending the paycheck to go. YOU SHOULD. I was amazing. I’m more than satisfied. Can’t wait for it again! We laughed, we cried, we held each other. I shall now refer to my life and “before Hamilton” and “after Hamilton”.IMG_8331IMG_8322Before the show, we grabbed brunch at Kanela Breakfast Club: I went there at least once a week when I lived in Chicago. The service is wonderful and the cinnamon bun appetizer, to die for. Plus the rotating specials are always innovative. I’m helpless to resist. Then on to drinks on the patio of Maple and Ash.img_8306.jpgIMG_8347R1

A that, is the story of tonight. Also a fan? Tell me how many songs you found! That would be enough.

Sunday Brunch in San Francisco

What to do when you have no plans and a small pomeranian on a Sunday? Duh, patio brunch! We’ve been dying to try Zazie, a quaint French restaurant that’s a Cole Valley staple. There is always a wait and every time we go, we give up immediately when we see the line, because obviously we are already hangry and need food to stay married. This time we went right when they opened and only had to wait about 45 minutes, during which time I fantasized about snatching food from people’s greedy little fingers and running away into the sunrise with Roxie. BUT, I didn’t and you GUYS! it was totally worth acting like an adult. Check out that Pain de Mie French Toast and that Eggs Vincent. It tasted even better than it looked.

What’s great about this place is how they treat their employees. It’s not a tip-based serving job. All of the menu prices include a living wage, revenue share, paid family leave, fully funded health & dental insurance, paid time off, and a 401(k) with employer match for all employees. All those things!! Having been a long-time server, I LOVE knowing that waitstaff is taken care of. It makes a giant cafe latte even more enjoyable (no handle! you sip it from a soup bowl). Now, on to the food.

Wardrobe Want: ALL The High-Waisted Jeans

I know what you might be thinking. I’m too old for hi-waisted jeans! I have kids, a corporate job, a mortgage… NO! Anyway, I will tell you right now that I felt the same way, Until I tried those forbidden high-waisted pants. And now it’s SO ON. High-waisted jeans in my 30’s people. They have changed my life. It’s literally like a comfortable corset. Case and point here. I tried on this shirt with medium/low rise jeans and it looks TERRIBLE. High-rise and voila I feel like a fancy celeb. Listen to me, like you’ve never listened before: get a pair, live your dreams.

7 Swimsuits You Need Before Summer Ends

There may only be one month of summer left, but that isn’t going to stop us from squeezing every last drop out of it. By now you are one of two people: 1) You have worn your current suits so much they are faded or stretched, 2) You never even bought a suit and/or haven’t hit the pool yet this year (say it ain’t so!!!). For both of you, I found a great range of must-have suits to keep the summer love going. The good news: a lot of them are, or will be, on “end of season” sale! Just remember 30+SPF facial sunscreen or a straw hat to keep that gorgeous face young and healthy (no wrinkles ’round here!)

L Space Farrah Bikini, $96: I love this suit! I have done everything from lounging to snorkeling to paddle boarding in this style. Good to have in the vacation rotation. But note the bottoms are cut slightly high in the back and the top is not adjustable, so keep that in mind for sizing. Continue reading

Wear A Graphic T-Shirt To Work

We’d all agree that a t-shirt and jeans is a classic it girl look, but if you have a semi-corporate job, you probably feel a little too casual wearing a graphic tee to the office. But, you say, I love my tees and want to wear them always. Well, good news. Mixed with more “traditional” work pieces, t-shirts don’t have to be only for the weekend. This is one of my favorite tricks inspired by a stranger I saw in SF rocking an old Doors t-shirt in a full white pantsuit. (She was truly a style goddess.) Speaking of pants, it works to swap the skirt for high-waisted jeans too.

10 Rehearsal Dinner Dresses That Aren’t White (+Wedding Guest Options)

Last night I was up at 1am helping a friend look for her rehearsal dinner dress. She didn’t actually ask me to help, but I got too excited and and then didn’t stop texting her dress options from shopbop for days. But it got me thinking, for a bride (like her, and myself) who doesn’t trust wearing white around red wine, (or just doesn’t want to buy another white dress she won’t wear again), what are the options for a rehearsal dinner! The answer – color and/or texture. I personally wore a tight, navy cut out dress that was probably said “give me that sangria” and not “sweet young bride”, but I felt 100% myself and the unique neckline slayed in pics. BUT BONUS, if you are not getting married, these are all great options for being a guest too (obviously, since none of them are white!). Enjoy!

Screen Shot 2017-07-25 at 8.14.16 PM.png1. Nicholas Bellflower, $675: STUNNING. I want this dress, but probably best for those with a smaller chest. Also seems comfortable for dancing – the range of motion with that skirt is tops.

Quick and Lovely Hair

Need to get from bedroom to boardroom (or, let’s be honest: the bar) in 20 minutes? (Maybe because you got wrapped up in a rerun of How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days and lost track of time? Been there.) Anyway, no need to look like you rushed out the door. Get your hair right, with a side twist finished with a chic ribbon.

Do a tighter twist for a more polished look. For a more casual weekend look, I like to style this with wavy hair, and pull out some pieces in the front and loosen the twist. Once you get good it takes about 2 minutes to do!
