How To Make Your Boss/Co-workers Love You + Mixed Prints

Listen friends, we all wish we were independently wealthy, yeah? You know, hanging out in the French Alps not working the 9-5 grind. But that’s not our (or at least my,) reality. We’ve got to work our faces off Monday to Friday to afford those weekend trips to Napa and our lovely condos. And since we spend more time at work than at home (TRUEE!!!), I feel we must commit to being our best selves at the office too. One way to do that, is by actively trying to be the best co-worker, employee and manager possible.

I’m in a field that’s creative, corporate, and team-oriented so have managed a lot of different types of people. I’ve run teams of up to 14 people and also teams of just 2 people. I’ve worked with people who were “please don’t ever leave me, you’re the only person who can do this” and people who were simply “good”. However, in my years of experience, I have noticed that there are consistent behavior traits across my strongest team members, that I always look for now in new hires. Today I’m going to share my tips so you can be the girl everyone wants on their team (aka Office MVP). This list is not exhaustive, but a good start.

BE HONEST: Boss ask you a question, but you don’t have the information? Don’t try to CYA and make up an answer. Just admit that you don’t know, then do your damnedest to find out quickly. No one expects you to have all the answers, but a half-baked response, or worse – an answer with incorrect information – can sometimes be more damaging to the job and the relationship (trust fail). You don’t have to know everything all the time – just be committed to finding answers when faced with an unresolved question. (Unless, of course, it is your singular job to know that singular thing he/she is asking you about, in which case, you better just know that thing. But that’s a different problem.)

In the same vein, if your manager asks you to complete a task and you don’t have the bandwidth to meet the given deadline, let him/her know. A simple: “I can’t do that by 5pm, but can deliver by tomorrow at 11am” or a “I can get it done by 5pm today, but will need to de-prioritze something else, what would you like me to move down the list?”, works brilliantly in bringing your manager into your world. Nine times out of ten, something can shift. If it can’t, put in the overtime or enlist more help. We allllls got to work late sometimes. I Tried Glossier: Here’s What I Think

With tons of new beauty lines launching every week, I’m skeptical to try a new brand comes out. After all, can it really be better than my go-tos like Nars? So when I heard about Glossier, I didn’t think much about it. Flash forward a few years later and Glossier popped up in Vogue, and I thought – THIS IS LEGIT NOW. I must try it. For a bit of background, Glossier was started in 2014 by Emily Weiss, the blogger behind Into The Gloss and former Vogue staffer. In just a few years, Glossier has amassed a huge cult following, with up to 10k waitlists for new lipsticks.

Scroll down for my first experience ordering Glossier, the final look and “would-I-buy-again?” decision.  This is very serious makeup business.

Here are the three products I ordered.

First impressions: It arrived in 3 days, even though the site said 5-8 days. I also had forgotten I ordered it, so it was like surprise makeup. Opened to find free samples and a sheet of stickers – a fun touch. The products I ordered came in a pink zippered pouch made of bubble wrap, loving that idea. No plastic waste and I have already repurposed that bubble bag. The Boy Brow and the Generation Lipstick are smaller in size than I anticipated for $18 but it’s not a deal-breaker. (p.s. The website is super easy to navigate and checkout was quick).

IMG_8582.jpgIMG_8586These three products together lent themselves well to a berry-colored palette. I loved this look for daytime! It felt light and pretty, but I still got some full brow coverage. The only other products I’m wearing are:

Wardrobe Want: More Pleated Midi Skirts

I am LOVING pleated skirts midi right now. They are so feminine and fun, and you can’t help but feel like a giddy girl in them (twirling optional). Since pleated skirts are so on trend, you can find one in almost any color and in lots of fun patterns. I found this bright striped number at J. Crew and styled it with a t-shirt (only $28!) since it’s still pretty warm here in California. I also love the look of a pleated skirt with a thick cable knit sweater and booties for cooler temps. I tried this skirt with a white silk button-up too and the outfit was trés professional. Enjoy, mon cherie.

Why I Love Reformation + Polka Dot Dress

By now you might have heard of the It-girl go-to brand Reformation. What makes Reformation different, is their admirable mission. It’s all about sustainability! They use environmentally-friendly practices and materials to make gorgeous, sassy styles for a fraction of the environmental impact of fast fashion (what’s not to love?). I am personally soooo obsessed with their dresses. Always available in fun prints, including polka dots, florals, stripes, etc., every dress feels like an easy win: throw it on and live your life while looking nonchalantly fabulous. You can find anything from casual slip dresses ($98) to wedding options (up to $350). And what I love most, is all Reformation pieces seem to have an eye for layering – you can imagine these worn with a jean or leather jacket over the shoulders. Voila, summer to fall. I can’t forget to mention the fabrics are luxurious too like the Velvet Anoush Dress or the Silk Getty Dress. I know I sound like and ad (and this is not one) I just really love their stuff. Plus free shipping and returns. Swoon.

polka dot dress.jpgIMG_7837img_7840.jpgStyles on the site do sell out quickly since everything is made as limited-run, but the plus side is there is always something new to shop. And while dresses are my favorite, they have fantastic blazers (I want all the plaid ones: Lazer Blazer and Claudette Coat), and sweaters that look so cozy. I want this Doen Lulu Sweater, but need to save some cashmoneyrecords first. Some things run (very slightly) small, so if you are between sizes go up, if you aren’t, go with your true to size.

Worth noting that if you return an item, be sure to postmark it within 14 days. Anything returned between 14-21 days is store credit only, and after that, no returns at all. (I’ve been guilty of missing the deadline myself and have quite a bit of store credit now, ooops. Not a terrible problem to have, I guess.)polka dot dress2red zara bag 2red zara bagOutfit Details: Dress: Reformation Boston Dress (size 6), Bag: Zara, Sunglasses: Elizabeth and James Allen in Mono, Lipstick: Nars Dragon Girl

The Best Beauty Gadgets You Need Now (That Actually Work!)

Ladies – there’s a lot of beauty gadget nonsense and hype out there. With all the new products coming out all the time, how do you know what’s worth the $$ and what’s not? Behold, my favorite tried and true gadgets you won’t regret (at all price points!)
Eyelash Curler
If I could have only ONE beauty product for the rest of my life, an eyelash curler would be it. It is literally the best invention of all time (better than electricity and indoor plumbing? Maybe.). Using an eyelash curler takes 10 seconds and makes your eyes look bigger, brighter, more lovely, more awake. And don’t cheap out on a $5 drugstore version, invest the $20 in one that works better and will last for years: Shu Uemera or Kevyn Aucon. Just buy one. Don’t break my heart.

3 Ways To Style A White Button-Up Shirt

I am really obsessing over my most recent purchase, the most basic and versatile of all wardrobe staples: a white button-up shirt. Mine is from Topshop and also comes in blue and light pink, plus it’s only $35!! Because I was wearing it all the time, and discovered it to be a great fall transition piece, I bought it in blue too. I wear them at least twice a week now. Spreading the love, I’m sharing three ways to style this fashion must with you!

Over a Work Dress (Tied at the Waist, Not Buttoned): A perfect solution when you want to forgo the office blazer, but can’t wear sleeveless. Try it tied at the waist with the top buttons undone. This is also a super easy way to transition a sleeveless dress into fall.  Flattering, comfortable, and professional.  What’s not to love?IMG_7484 Continue reading “3 Ways To Style A White Button-Up Shirt”

72 Hours In Telluride, Colorado (Part I)

Friends! I did not know this before, but Telluride is where it’s AT. Did you know? Last weekend, our lovely friends got married at a ranch in the mountains, so all the guests stayed in Telluride. Even though it’s a tiny town (like, one street), there’s something in Telluride for everyone: great food, lively bars, boutique shopping, hikes, (so many hikes…), spas, and of course, skiing in winter (it was not winter in September, thank goodness). It’s one of the best weekend getaways I’ve been on with my husband (and of course, the 150 other guests, ha). I’m IN LOVE. Let’s talk about it.

First off. The place looks like THIS. Barely looks real.IMG_7593IMG_7598

The first night, the welcome party was at the historic bar, The New Sheridon. Most of it is the same as it was in 1800’s, including the tin ceilings. They serve food, but let’s be honest, tonight I’m here for the bar. More on the food tomorrow.
